We are looking back on 125 years of Birmingham Dogs Home - celebrating the hard work of every member of our team, everyone that has rehomed and cared for our dogs, our dedicated supporters and of course...the dogs themselves.

Our charity has come so far from where it began back in 1892, but it wouldn't have been possible without the kindness of Sir Alfred Gooch Bart who helped get the charity off the ground. We started back in New Canal Street in the heart of the city, with almost 95 years in that centre it was time to expand and help the rising number of strays needing our help. In 1987 we moved to New Bartholomew Street where we could help rescue over 120 dogs at any one time.

The stray numbers continued to rise and our outreach began to increase with the demand for our services. With this came the beginning of our second Centre, Sunnyside. Based in Coven Wolverhampton, this enabled the charity to help more stray dogs across a wider area which now expands across the West Midlands and South Staffordshire area.

Throughout the years our teams have grown, gained more knowledge and have provided our dogs with the highest quality of welfare possible. Now, with the help of our supporters, both our centres boast state-of-the-art facilities for every single dog to enjoy whilst in our care. These include glass-fronted kennels, specially adapted play areas, isolation blocks, acres of land, veterinary suit and much more.

In 2015, we had the pleasure of moving our Birmingham Centre to its newly built centre to help the thousands of dogs that come through our doors, giving us 12.45 acres of land for our dogs to enjoy.

A superb building that takes your breath away - we love it!

Looking back at history makes you realise just how far we have come, helping 100,000 dogs find new loving homes, helping to rebuild dogs confidence, getting thousands of dogs back to full health, our outreach of BDH Education in the local community and that is just small part of what we have done.

It's important to remember that we couldn't do our job without the help of our supporters, the local community who always respond when we have a Facebook appeal or if we need help with an injured dogs veterinary bills - you are always there, supporting us every step of the way. Thank you.

We also couldn't have done this without the help of many organisations along the way Pedigree UK, Thomson Airways, Ancol Pet ProductsSupport Adoption For PetsPets at HomeSt George's VetsJollyes Willenhall and many many more! A big thank you from everyone at BDH for your kindness, your trust in us and your support.

To celebrate this BIG birthday we have put together a commemorative poster which features over 200 dogs - all rehomed from BDH, and all were kindly put forward by our Facebook followers. This poster has been put up at our Birmingham Centre and it is on view for all to see in the long corridor.

Thank you to our teams for all their hard work and thank you to you - our supporters.
