1 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Bubble arrived to us in July 2024 after being found wondering the streets as an abandoned stray. Within a few days our Canine Carers noticed that Bubble was very round in the middle and could be expecting puppies. A trip to the vets for an ultrasound scan confirmed the pregnancy, Bubble was due to have her pups in the following weeks.
To ensure she had a quiet and calm final few weeks before becoming a Mum, Bubble was transferred to the Behaviour and Training unit.
Bubble started to give birth to her puppies during the day but unfortunately the birth wasn’t as smooth as expected. Her second puppy became stuck inside Bubble and needed medical intervention from the onsite Vet Team to ensure the safety of Mum and pups. A puppy getting stuck inside Mum is a medical emergency as it can lead to a uterus rupture which is life threating to both Mum and pups. With help from the Vet Team Bubble managed to give birth to 7 puppies.
Life as Mum didn’t go as smoothly as expected for Bubble’s as a few days after giving birth she stopped producing milk to feed her young litter. To save stress for both Bubbles and her pups the Canine Team at BDH decided the best course of action would be for the pups to be hand reared to give time for Bubbles to recover. Our Canine Carers team stepped up and took the puppies home to hand rear them 24 hours a day and will continue to do so until they are ready to be weaned onto solid food.
The puppies will stay with us until they are 8 weeks old where we will begin the journey to find them fur-ever homes. As Bubbles is no longer feeding her pups she has been able to start her journey to find a new home a little earlier than expected and has already had a family interested in rehoming her.
