Sprout arrived to us in June 2024 after being found alone wondering in the streets of Birmingham. He was taken in and reviewed by the Canine Team who established he was a sweet boy who wanted nothing more than human attention and cuddles. Unfortunately for Sprout it was clear that he has some medical concerns that needed to be addressed.

His right eye was showing signs of ‘cherry eye’ that needed to be treated with an operation. His eye healed and he recovered from this operation well, however the Vet Team were very concerned about the discomfort that seemed to be coming from his front right leg.

Sprout was struggling to walk comfortably, and his leg seemed to be at an odd angle. Due to the pain, the Vets needed to xray him as soon as possible to see what the underlying problem was. During his xray it was found that he had two injuries that were causing him pain. An old fracture that hadn’t healed properly, this kind of injury could have been caused by a fall or even from something more serious such as being hit by a car. We will never know how long Sprout was straying before we found him, but this injury could have been with him for a long time.

The second injury was in relation to his elbow where it seemed like the bones were not joined properly. This was undoubtly causing him a lot of pain, and it wasn’t something that would be able to heal naturally. The Vet Team made the tough decision to amputate his leg in hope of giving him a pain free life.

Sprout has his operation at the beginning of September and is well on the road to a full recovery. In the first few weeks he was a little wobbly and in pain but as the weeks have gone on, he has gone from strength to strength.

He has recently been rehomed to a family and we are so please he has got his waggy ending!
