Gift in Will Stories

“My Godmother, Gillian was a dog lover all her life, and she was particularly fond of Corgis. She supported the work of Birmingham Dogs Home, a charity local to her and close to her heart, for many years, always making donations at Christmas. She decided that when she passed away, the charity would benefit from her estate and therefore she made a provision, which as a family we were very happy to support.
Gillian’s legacy is her love of dogs and her support of the Birmingham Dogs Home which never waived during her life”

“My mum, Mary Teresa Dennett, left a gift in her will to Birmingham Dogs Home.
My mum was a lover of dogs, having owned several beagles in particular. Her last dog was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, called Poppy, who was the apple of her eye and a great companion to mum after I moved out of the family home.
Mum was always keen to donate dog food to BDH when she saw the baskets in the local supermarkets and understood and appreciated the work that the charity did with an animal she adored.
Mum had a special way with dogs; Poppy for instance was incredibly well trained. Her favourite meal was roast chicken and mum would cook them for her several times a week (Poppy didn’t eat dog food!). Her bond with dogs was incredibly strong, and she would always seek to fuss or say hello to dogs whenever she saw them.
Mum was mindful of ensuring the legacies she left to charity would have the real possibility to make a difference to the charity. Being a local charity (rather than national) means she, and in turn, I know the monies will go further and hopefully allow for the contribution towards staff or volunteer costs, or keep some dogs fed, watered and with toys for a little while.
Mum’s love of dogs was passed over to me; they’re such special creatures. Unfortunately, the hours myself and my husband keep mean it is not fair for us to have a dog who requires such routine and structure. I do hope one day our lifestyles mean we can give a dog a loving and loyal home.”

Like many, dogs have been a huge part of my life and like my wife, I’ve been a supporter of Birmingham Dogs Home for many years.
We were fortunate to be able to reunite siblings Casper and Luna after Casper was spotted being sold on a social media site. Bringing them together on Christmas Day, five years ago, made for the best ever Christmas.
In January 2023, we welcomed Sasha, a three-year-old Romanian rescue, into our home. She hadn’t had a great start to her young life, and after being discarded by her family after lockdown spent time in kennels and a lot of foster homes. Having a rescue can have its challenges as you don’t know their past, but with love, support and encouragement you can enrich both your lives knowing that you’re also saving a life.
When my wife and I decided to make a Will, we chose a mirrored Will and made sure that the Birmingham Dogs Home was top of our list of charities that would benefit for years to come.
I wanted my love of dogs to continue and live on, so that many other rescues get the help they deserve in the future.

“I have actively supported Birmingham Dogs home for over 50 years, through regular monthly Direct Debit donations, collections and fundraising. When the time came to make a Will, I had no hesitation in including Birmingham Dogs Home as a beneficiary. I know that in years to come my money would still be helping and supporting this wonderful charity.”
