Volunteer with Birmingham Dogs Home

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Birmingham Dogs Home

Volunteer opportunities

Volunteering with Birmingham Dogs Home is rewarding in so many ways and is a fantastic way to support our charity’s work, helping local homeless dogs.

From raising money at our community events to working with our canine carers as a dog walker, playing with dogs to provide enrichment or helping with site maintenance and driving, there are lots of ways to get involved and have fun. By contributing to the day to day running of our rescue centres you will be making a big difference to the lives of local dogs most in need of support.

Why volunteer with us?

There are lots of great reasons to volunteer with BDH. Our volunteers all share a passion for animal welfare and a love of dogs, and volunteering is also a great way to meet like-minded new friends, learn new skills and utilise your current skills with true purpose.

We foster a friendly, welcoming environment with regular opportunities to meet up with other volunteers and staff and really feel part of the team, as well as annual thank you events, to celebrate your hard work.

How can I become a volunteer?

We have a simple five-step process to become a volunteer:

  1. Complete an application form on Volunteero to express your interest.
  2. Attend one of our open morning events to learn more about our work and meet the team.
  3. Have an informal chat with our Volunteer Development Coordinator to help us get to know you better.
  4. Complete our induction and training modules to give you the skills and confidence to get started.
  5. Begin making a difference by signing up for your first volunteering shift!

We welcome enquiries from all backgrounds, however we ask that all of our volunteers are over the age of 18. Because of this we are unfortunately unable to accommodate requests for Duke of Edinburgh volunteering

Please email volunteers@birminghamdogshome.org.uk for more information.

FAQs

We welcome applications if you are 18 or over.

For many of our volunteer roles, all you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn! We will provide all the training and support that you need to do your role. However, for roles that involve hands-on care of our dogs, we are looking for people who are comfortable and confident around dogs of all sizes, strengths, and temperaments. Our dogs come from a variety of backgrounds and include many different breeds, so experience with different dogs is helpful for these roles.

This will depend on your role but ideally we would like you to agree to set days and hours so we can arrange supervision and fit in your role with staff operations.

You can volunteer to help at our Birmingham rescue centre near Solihull or our Wolverhampton rescue centre near Coven. You can also volunteer to support our fundraising team at events at various locations and dates throughout the year.

We provide PPE including high-visibility vests, safety gloves and safety goggles for our volunteers. Our volunteers are free to wear their own clothes, so long as they comply with our guidelines.

Yes – we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for every volunteer. Please contact Sami@birminghamdogshome.org.uk to discuss your specific needs and how we can support you.

Important Notice – Birmingham Centre Closed this Thursday, 18th Sept.

Our Birmingham Centre will be closed to the public this Thursday due to essential maintenance works in the local area, which will leave us without power and water for the day.

Please be assured that our dedicated team will be fully prepared to manage this disruption. The welfare of our dogs remains our top priority – they will still receive all the care, cleaning, and plenty of fresh water they need throughout the day.

Thank you for your understanding and support. We’ll be back open as usual on Friday.
